DW Tournament - Betrayal in the Philippines

Six games played end of May - all 1000 points

The weak Spanish government, which colonized the Philippines, is not only facing a rebellion of indigenous populations. It is also facing the greed of the major world powers. FSA, KOB, EOBS, PE, COA and ROF consider the fruit is now ripe. Their heavy warships approach the Philippines. Fishermen from Bulusan of Virac return to port as they spot dark shapes on the horizon, and many reconnaissance aircrafts.

For this small 4 players tournament, each of us prepared 3 lists, naval or aerial. No medium/large/massive model was allowed to be used in more than one list. I prepared (a) 2 FSA and one KOB lists. The others prepared: (b) 3 COA lists (c) 3 ROF lists (one aerial) (d) 2 EOBS and 1 PE lists.
One random list was then given to another player and each player secretly decided which list he would play against each other player.
This led to unusual and funny COA vs COA and ROF vs ROF games (... hence the name "Betrayal in the Philippines").

  • Player A (me) played the following lists: FSA / COA / KOB
  • Player B : FSA / COA / COA
  • Player C: EOBS / ROF / ROF
  • Player D: EOBS / ROF / PE

FIRST ROUND

FSA vs EOBS (player A vs player D) - Crushing victory for EOBS (player D)

  • FSA had 2 x 4 Augusta, 1 Annapolis (shield), 3 Lee, 1 Valley and 1 Independance (shield)
  • EOBS had 4 Yurgi, 3 MkI Honshu, 3 Arashi, 1 Raijin and 1 Kaiju (shield) with 2 Kitsune

Field orders: FSA drew Free to engage (70%). EOBS drew the same.

150523EOBSvsFSA

Summary / highlights:
FSA tryed to get close but suffered a lot from the huge amount of rockets EOBS was able to fire from far away. The Lee airships that flew above islands were perfect targets for the Japanese fleet - one was destroyed during the first turn, and another was sunk every turn after.
Augusta frigates rushed forward but did not get through either.
At the end of the game, FSA had only managed to sink the Raijin and one Yurgi destroyer.

FSA vs EOBS (player B vs player C) - Minor victory for EOBS (player C)

  • FSA had 1 Savannah, 1 Boston, 1 Independance with 2 Springfield, 2 Georgetown, 1 B72 and 5 Revere
  • EOBS had 1 Sokotsu, 1 Kiyohime, 1 Mizuchi, 3 Tanuki, 3 Nakatsu and 5 Fujin

Field orders: FSA drew Thin their ranks (small). EOBS drew Break their backs (medium).

150523FSAvsEOBS

Summary / highlights:
A crazy game with many unexpected developments.
The big island in the middle blocked lines of sight between the left side and the right side of the table.
On the right side, the B72 heavy bomber was targeted by Japanese cruisers and was destroyed before being able to use its bombs. The Boston submarine was boarded by the Tanuki gunships.
On the left side, the Mizuchi battle cruiser was teleported outside the table. The Savannah sky fortress sunk a Tanuki gunship. The Japanese Fujin corvettes ravaged the American Revere corvettes. The last Georgetown survived till the last turn despite an incredible amount of shots and rams but the Savannah sky fortress was prized by lucky Japanese cruisers (only 3 AP lost on the Japanese side).

SECOND ROUND

COA1 vs COA2 (player B vs player A) - Crushing victory for COA2 (player A)

  • COA1 had 2 Aristote escorted by 3 Galen, 1 Pericles, 2 Plato (energy weapons) and 3 Plutarch
  • COA2 had 1 Aronnax, 2 Callimachus, 2 Kepler, 1 Hyperbius, 3 Zeno and 2 Plutarch

Field orders: COA1 drew Free to engage (70%). COA2 drew Break their backs (medium models).

150524COAvsCOA

Summary / highlights: hiding behind the big island, the first Callimachus orb teleported the Zeno cruisers and the latter wreaked havoc on the first half of the opposing fleet. Then the second Callimachus orb, escorted by the Aronnax, climbed on the island and spread panic and fear among other enemy ships that were approaching.

ROF1 vs ROF2 (player D vs player C) - Crushing victory for ROF1 (player D)

  • ROF1 had 3 Magenta (with cloud generators), 3 Dieppe, 4 Epaulard, 2 Requin
  • ROF2 had 2 Tourbillon, 1 Couronne, 2 Toulon, 3 Furieux, 2 Requin, 2 Frelon

Field orders: both drew Thin their ranks (small).

150524ROFvsROF

Summary / highlights: Magenta are fast, strong and powerful (and inexpensive) so it was an easy game for ROF1.
ROF2 air models tried to approach, under fire from Magenta and Epaulard bombards. Furieux Airships were destroyed one by one before they could become threatening. Dieppe cruisers boarded the Couronne carrier. ROF2 Requin corvettes boarded a Dieppe but were quickly destroyed after. The 2 Frelon planes desperately tried to bomb the ROF1 Requin corvettes but were also destroyed. During the last turn, a Tourbillon sky fortress was successfully boarded by a Magenta and ROF1 won an undisputed victory.

THIRD ROUND

COA vs PE (player B vs player D) - Crushing victory for COA (player B)

  • PE had 1 Elbe, 1 Rhine, 3 Hussar, 3 Donnerfaust and 5 Saxony
  • COA had 1 Diophantus, 1 Hippasus, 3 Cleomedes, 2 Fresnel, 4 Diogene and 5 Thales

Field orders: PE drew Vital assets destruction (destroy all large/massive models) and COA drew Thin their ranks (destroy all small models)

Summary / highlights:
Turn 1: the Prussian fleet suffered a lot from long distance shots and inflicted almost no damage during the first turn. A Donnerfaust cruiser was sunk. Hussar gunships rushed forward and were also heavily damaged.
Turn 2: despite many interceptions, drones inflicted heavy losses on Prussian ships. The Cleomedes cruisers also took their toll. At the end of the turn, only one Hussar gunship was left. The Elbe and Rhine carriers were also greatly affected. Prussian ships did once again negligible damage to the COA fleet.
Turn 3: the last Hussar boarded a Fresnel gunship. Last drones were destroyed and Prussian carriers launched waves of bombers in the sky. The Prussian corvettes left the shelter of a big island (fatal mistake if you remember Field orders above) and boarded the Hippasus (prized) while destroying small enemy models. The Diophantus, under crossfire from Rhine and Elbe, began to suffer. A Cleomedes cruiser was sunk. The game seemed to be at a turning point.
Turn 4: The Diophantus was repaired and the COA methodically sunk each remaining Prussian corvette so as to achieve its Field order. Repeated attacks of bombers and Tesla weapons damaged the Diophantus. The latter had only one HP left, its shield generator was gone, ... the Rhine carrier fired all its weapons and ... did nothing.

KOB vs ROF (player A vs player C) - Crushing victory for ROF (player C)

  • KOB had 1 Monarch, 1 Ruler, 3 Tribal with 1 Dominion, 1 Halifax and 3 Stalwart
  • ROF had 1 Saint-Malo with Ecuyer, 1 Rochelle with Ecuyer, 3 Cherbourg and 2 Requin

Field orders: KOB drew Free to engage (70%). ROF drew Thin their ranks (small models).

150525KOBvsROF Summary / highlights:
KOB tried to stay at long range so as to damage the 3 Cherbourg before they get at RB2. But ROF hid all its medium models behind the big Rochelle and Saint-Malo battleships while approaching.
All KOB guns firing together were unable to hurt the French cloud-protected battleships but the latter reduced to ashes the Tribal/Dominion squadron.
In the last turns, the Halifax successfully damaged both French battleships (2 + 3 HP) but was quickly destroyed after. The 3 Stalwart did not do much before being sunk.
Ruler and Monarch were only slightly damaged during this game, as destroying all Britannian medium and small models was enough to achieve the French Field order.

CONCLUSION

With 2 crushing victories, player D won the tournament and became Prince of the Philippines!

Deployment

COA won the strategic advantage.

Field orders

KOB drew the Commodore’s discretion field order and secretly chose the Break their backs card.
COA drew the Go for their leader card.

Turn 1: Tribal cruisers and Valiant submarines lead Britannian offensive - they sink an enemy light cruiser

Summary: Plutarch destroyers hid behind an island, preparing an ambush. The rest of COA forces moved away from Britannian largest models. A Plato light cruiser was sunk by long range shots from Tribal cruisers.

Activation order: KOB played a Lost Order TAC / COA torpedo drones / KOB Tribal’s turrets and torpedoes sank Plato (2 x critical hit) / COA Plato failed to damage Tribal / KOB Valiants failed to damage Plato and 3 of them failed their swift manoeuvre / COA torpedo drones / KOB dive bomber SAS / COA torpedo drones / KOB dive bomber SAS / COA torpedo drones / KOB reco plane / COA Aristote sank Valiant / KOB Monarch damaged Galen (1HP) / COA Aristote caused critical hit on Tribal (hard pounding) / KOB Agincourt failed to damage Galen / COA Pericles failed to damage Valiant / KOB Regent attached a CAP and failed to damage Galen / COA Plutarch

150501_1.jpg

Victory points: COA 55 - KOB 55

Turn 2: Tribal and Valiant fall under deluge of iron and fire, while enemy destroyers ambush reinforcements

Summary: Plutarch destroyers came out of hiding and attacked Agincourt gunships.
Two Tribal cruisers were destroyed (one of them because of a Sturginium flare critical effect) by shots from torpedo drones, Aristote batteship and Pericles drone launcher. Two Valiant submarines were sunk by shots from Aristote battleship and torpedo drones.

Activation order: COA torpedo drones caused critical hit on damaged Tribal / KOB Valiant caused critical hit on Plato / COA Aristote destroyed one Valiant and sank damaged Tribal / KOB dive bomber SAS attacked torpedo drones (3 drone SAS and 2 dive bombers SAS were lost in the dogfight) / COA torpedo drones failed to damage Monarch / KOB dive bombers SAS / COA damaged torpedo drones SAS sank another Valiant / KOB Monarch failed to damage Plato and damaged Plutarch (1HP and 2AP because of piercing effect) / COA Pericles launched new drones and scored 13 hits (double crit) on Tribal - a Sturginium flare teleported Tribal on nearby island – second Tribal was destroyed / KOB 3rd Tribal fled / COA Plato failed to damage last tribal / KOB Regent failed to damage Galen / COA Aristote destroyed 3 dive bomber SAW, caused critical hit on last Tribal and damaged Monarch (1HP) / KOB Agincourt failed to damage Pericles / COA Plutarch caused critical hit on Agincourt / COA torpedo drones damaged same Agincourt (1HP)

150501_2.jpg

Victory points: COA 245 - KOB 55

Turn 3: torpedoes cause sturginium flare and destroy instantaneously COA's flagship - hope comes back to Britannian forces

Summary: one Plutarch destroyer and one Agincourt gunship were destroyed in the fight between the two squadrons. The Agincourt's piercing torpedoes caused a Sturginium flare that disintegrated the Pericles drone launcher (NB: we made another mistake here - when rolling for piercing critical effect, any result of a 2 or 12 must be re-rolled - section C5).
The damaged Aristote battleship was not able to repair its weapons at the end of the turn.

Activation order: COA played Espionage to cancel Battlefield repair TAC / KOB Agincourt destroyed one Plutarch and damaged Pericles (1HP) – the piercing effect caused a Sturginium flare which sent Pericles (and commodore) out of the table / COA Plutarch sank damaged Agincourt / KOB Monarch failed to damage Galen and Aristote / COA Aristote destroyed dive bomber SAS, damaged Valiant (1HP with CC) and caused critical hit (generators offline) on Monarch / KOB Valiant failed to damage Plato / COA 2nd Aristote destroyed 2 last Valiants (CC and broadsides/Galen) and caused critical hit (weapons damage) on Monarch / KOB Regent caused critical hit on Aristote (weapons damage) / COA Plato failed to damage fleeing Tribal / KOB Tribal / COA torpedo drones attacked dive bombers SAS (one KOB SAW is destroyed) / KOB dive bombers SAS failed to damage Plutarch / other squadrons / KOB repaired all critical effects during the end of turn phase but COA was not able to repair the weapons on the Aristote.

150501_3.jpg

Victory points: COA 385 - KOB 400

Turn 4: surviving COA squadrons focus fire on Monarch heavy battleship and manage to fulfill their Field Order

Summary: the two last Plutarch destroyers were sunk by Agincourt Gunships, but their sacrifice had not been in vain: Aristote battleships and torpedo drones blew the Monarch heavy battleship up and killed the Britannian commodore.

Activation order: COA torpedo drones caused critical hit on Monarch (engine failure) / KOB Agincourt destroyed 2 last Plutarch / COA Despite weapons damage, Aristote sank Monarch / KOB Regent re-tasked SAS and failed to damage Aristote / COA 2nd Aristote failed to damage Tribal / KOB torpedo SAS failed to damage Aristote / other squadrons

150501_4.jpg

Victory points: COA 625 - KOB 520

COA won

Conclusions and learning points

  • Two models destroyed by sturginium flares in one evening! It was a crazy game.
  • We enjoyed a lot playing each other's fleet. It renews gaming pleasure.
  • I decided to take advantage of my deployment and shoot Britannian squadrons one by one as they were approaching. Despite the unexpected loss of my flagship, this strategy worked, thanks to some good rolls and thanks to two efficient Aristote battleships; the latter destroyed approximately 20HP - and lost only 2HP - in 4 turns!
  • Drones also played an important role, although they did not perform as well as in other games (when I was on the receiving end).

Dystopian Wars - Game played April 18, 2015

FSA vs ROF/COA - 800 points

I was playing FSA. My two friends were playing a ROF-COA alliance.

1504180

ROF/COA alliance, from left to right on above picture (click to enlarge):

  • 3 Dieppe cruiser with agressive crew 240 points
  • Magenta MkI with Cloud Generator 175 points
  • 5 fighter SAW
  • 5 torpedo drones
  • Diophantus assault cruiser with drone launcher (9) 220 points
  • 4 torpedo drones
  • 3 Requin corvettes 60 points
  • 5 fighter SAW
  • 5 Thales corvettes 100 points

FSA, from left to right on above picture:

  • 3 Georgetown cruiser with shield 215 points
  • 5 fighter SAW
  • Liberty heavy battleship with shield 235 points
  • Independance battleship with shield 190 points
  • 5 fighter SAW
  • 4 Augusta frigates 120 points

Deployment

ROF/COA won the strategic advantage.

Field orders

Both camps drew the Vital assets destruction Field Order (sink all large/massive models) card and chose to replace it by the Free to engage Field Order.

Turn 1: a cautious start

Summary: as both fleet moved caustiously forward, keeping their small or medium models away from large enemy ships, no HP was lost during the first turn.

Activation order: ROF played a Lost Order TAC card / ROF fighter SAS / FSA Augusta / FSA Independance failed to damage Diophantus / ROF-COA torpedo drones / FSA Liberty scored 9 hits but failed to damage Diophantus / ROF-COA torpedo drones / FSA Georgetown / ROF Magenta failed to damage Georgetown / ROF Dieppe / ROF Requin / ROF-COA Thales / ROF-COA Diophantus failed to damage Georgetown / ROF fighter SAS

1504181

Victory points: ROF 0 - FSA 20

Turn 2: the powerful American heavy battleship turns to face its foes and shows its strength by sinking a French cruiser with a single shot; but a few minutes later its weapons are severely (and definitively) damaged by the French battleship

Summary: the Independance battleship and the Dieppe cruisers failed pityfully their shots. The Liberty heavy battleship sank one Dieppe cruiser but was badly hurt (4HP lost) by shots from COA torpedo drones and Magenta Battleship. Moreover, the Liberty got a Weapons damage critical effect that could not be repaired at the end of the turn (despite the commodore's reroll).

Activation order: FSA Georgetown damaged Dieppe (1HP) / ROF Dieppe failed to damage Georgetown (only 4 hits with 14 dice) / FSA Liberty sank the damaged Dieppe thanks to two successful punishing gunnery shots (2 x 3HP) / ROF-COA torpedo drones scored a critical hit on Liberty (navigational lock) / FSA fighter SAS destroyed torpedo drones / ROF Magenta scored 18 hits on Liberty with 15 dice (Weapons damage) / FSA Independance scored 5 hits on Diophantus with 13 dice / ROF fighter SAS destroyed American fighter SAS / ROF-COA Diophantus launched new drones, damaged Augusta (1HP) but its particle accelerator failed to damage Liberty / ROF-COA Thales failed to damage Liberty / all other models

1504182

Victory points: ROF 0 - FSA 100

Turn 3: as the second wave of drones is about to fall down on the American fleet, the Liberty heavy battleship tries to board the Diophantus in a desperate move, but fails pityfully and is prized

Summary: one Georgetown cruiser was sunk by focused shots from Diophantus assault cruiser, Dieppe cruisers and Magenta battleship. The Diophantus assault cruiser was only lightly damaged by shots from the American fleet. The Liberty Heavy Battleship tried to board the Diophantus. The latter had only 4 AA left for its anti-boarding fire but the COA player rolled four "six", instantaneously destroying all American hopes.

Activation order: FSA Battlefield repair TAC was cancelled by an Espionage TAC / ROF-COA Diophantus sank one Augusta (torpedoes, 8 hits), damaged one Georgetown (broadsides, 1HP) and caused a critical hit on Independence (PA, 14 hits with 12 “5-6” dice!) / FSA Georgetown sank one Thales and damaged the Diophantus (1HP) / ROF-COA Thales failed to damage Independence (only 4 hits with 13 AD!) / FSA Independence damaged Diophantus (1HP) / ROF Dieppe caused critical hit on Georgetown / FSA Augusta failed to damage Diophantus / ROF Magenta sank damaged Georgetown (9 hits) / FSA Liberty failed to board Diophantus (9 AP killed on the American side, only 1 on the COA side) / ROF Requin prized Liberty

1504183

Victory points: ROF 575 / FSA 185

ROF-COA alliance won

Conclusions and learning points

  • boarding the Diophantus assault cruiser with my Liberty Heavy battleship was obviously very risky. But I could not see any other way of winning this game at that time, as my heavy battleship was about to be destroyed by the second wave of torpedo drones.
  • As I wanted to stop the drone spam, I fired a lot at the COA assault cruiser (6 shots) but the latter lost only 2HP; the Diophantus (wave lurking, CR11, shield 2, inventive scientist) is very difficult to damage. After the game, I figured out that you need an average of 21 AD to get a critical hit when it is wave-lurking. This model is a beast!
  • I was also impressed by the French Magenta battleship. It throws 15 AD at RB3 and has a very good defense (cloud generator). Its performance in this game was better than my Liberty's performance, although the Magenta is 60 points cheaper!
