Last friday, we decided to change places: I played COA and my friend played KOB.

KOB, from left to right on above picture (click to enlarge):

  • 5 Valiant submarines 125 points
  • 3 Tribal cruisers 210 points
  • 2 x 5 dive bombers SAW
  • Monarch heavy battleship with elite crew 235 points - Commodore's flagship
  • Reconnaissance SAW
  • Regent battle carrier with Guardian 160 points
  • 5 fighter SAW
  • 3 Agincourt gunships 270 points

COA, from left to right on above picture:

  • 3 Plato light cruisers 165 points
  • 5 torpedo drones
  • Aristote battleship with target painter 210 points
  • + 2 Galen escorts (... which should be on above picture ...) 50 points
  • Pericles drone launcher 180 points - Commodore's flagship
  • Aristote battleship with target painter 210 points
  • + 1 Galen escort (... which should also be on above picture ...) 25 points
  • 3 x 5 torpedo drones (NB: we made a mistake - one of those SAS should have only 4 SAW)
  • 3 Plutarch destroyers 150 points

Deployment

COA won the strategic advantage.

Field orders

KOB drew the Commodore’s discretion field order and secretly chose the Break their backs card.
COA drew the Go for their leader card.

Turn 1: Tribal cruisers and Valiant submarines lead Britannian offensive - they sink an enemy light cruiser

Summary: Plutarch destroyers hid behind an island, preparing an ambush. The rest of COA forces moved away from Britannian largest models. A Plato light cruiser was sunk by long range shots from Tribal cruisers.

Activation order: KOB played a Lost Order TAC / COA torpedo drones / KOB Tribal’s turrets and torpedoes sank Plato (2 x critical hit) / COA Plato failed to damage Tribal / KOB Valiants failed to damage Plato and 3 of them failed their swift manoeuvre / COA torpedo drones / KOB dive bomber SAS / COA torpedo drones / KOB dive bomber SAS / COA torpedo drones / KOB reco plane / COA Aristote sank Valiant / KOB Monarch damaged Galen (1HP) / COA Aristote caused critical hit on Tribal (hard pounding) / KOB Agincourt failed to damage Galen / COA Pericles failed to damage Valiant / KOB Regent attached a CAP and failed to damage Galen / COA Plutarch

Victory points: COA 55 - KOB 55

Turn 2: Tribal and Valiant fall under deluge of iron and fire, while enemy destroyers ambush reinforcements

Summary: Plutarch destroyers came out of hiding and attacked Agincourt gunships.
Two Tribal cruisers were destroyed (one of them because of a Sturginium flare critical effect) by shots from torpedo drones, Aristote batteship and Pericles drone launcher. Two Valiant submarines were sunk by shots from Aristote battleship and torpedo drones.

Activation order: COA torpedo drones caused critical hit on damaged Tribal / KOB Valiant caused critical hit on Plato / COA Aristote destroyed one Valiant and sank damaged Tribal / KOB dive bomber SAS attacked torpedo drones (3 drone SAS and 2 dive bombers SAS were lost in the dogfight) / COA torpedo drones failed to damage Monarch / KOB dive bombers SAS / COA damaged torpedo drones SAS sank another Valiant / KOB Monarch failed to damage Plato and damaged Plutarch (1HP and 2AP because of piercing effect) / COA Pericles launched new drones and scored 13 hits (double crit) on Tribal - a Sturginium flare teleported Tribal on nearby island – second Tribal was destroyed / KOB 3rd Tribal fled / COA Plato failed to damage last tribal / KOB Regent failed to damage Galen / COA Aristote destroyed 3 dive bomber SAW, caused critical hit on last Tribal and damaged Monarch (1HP) / KOB Agincourt failed to damage Pericles / COA Plutarch caused critical hit on Agincourt / COA torpedo drones damaged same Agincourt (1HP)

Victory points: COA 245 - KOB 55

Turn 3: torpedoes cause sturginium flare and destroy instantaneously COA's flagship - hope comes back to Britannian forces

Summary: one Plutarch destroyer and one Agincourt gunship were destroyed in the fight between the two squadrons. The Agincourt's piercing torpedoes caused a Sturginium flare that disintegrated the Pericles drone launcher (NB: we made another mistake here - when rolling for piercing critical effect, any result of a 2 or 12 must be re-rolled - section C5).
The damaged Aristote battleship was not able to repair its weapons at the end of the turn.

Activation order: COA played Espionage to cancel Battlefield repair TAC / KOB Agincourt destroyed one Plutarch and damaged Pericles (1HP) – the piercing effect caused a Sturginium flare which sent Pericles (and commodore) out of the table / COA Plutarch sank damaged Agincourt / KOB Monarch failed to damage Galen and Aristote / COA Aristote destroyed dive bomber SAS, damaged Valiant (1HP with CC) and caused critical hit (generators offline) on Monarch / KOB Valiant failed to damage Plato / COA 2nd Aristote destroyed 2 last Valiants (CC and broadsides/Galen) and caused critical hit (weapons damage) on Monarch / KOB Regent caused critical hit on Aristote (weapons damage) / COA Plato failed to damage fleeing Tribal / KOB Tribal / COA torpedo drones attacked dive bombers SAS (one KOB SAW is destroyed) / KOB dive bombers SAS failed to damage Plutarch / other squadrons / KOB repaired all critical effects during the end of turn phase but COA was not able to repair the weapons on the Aristote.

Victory points: COA 385 - KOB 400

Turn 4: surviving COA squadrons focus fire on Monarch heavy battleship and manage to fulfill their Field Order

Summary: the two last Plutarch destroyers were sunk by Agincourt Gunships, but their sacrifice had not been in vain: Aristote battleships and torpedo drones blew the Monarch heavy battleship up and killed the Britannian commodore.

Activation order: COA torpedo drones caused critical hit on Monarch (engine failure) / KOB Agincourt destroyed 2 last Plutarch / COA Despite weapons damage, Aristote sank Monarch / KOB Regent re-tasked SAS and failed to damage Aristote / COA 2nd Aristote failed to damage Tribal / KOB torpedo SAS failed to damage Aristote / other squadrons

Victory points: COA 625 - KOB 520

COA won

Conclusions and learning points

  • Two models destroyed by sturginium flares in one evening! It was a crazy game.
  • We enjoyed a lot playing each other's fleet. It renews gaming pleasure.
  • I decided to take advantage of my deployment and shoot Britannian squadrons one by one as they were approaching. Despite the unexpected loss of my flagship, this strategy worked, thanks to some good rolls and thanks to two efficient Aristote battleships; the latter destroyed approximately 20HP - and lost only 2HP - in 4 turns!
  • Drones also played an important role, although they did not perform as well as in other games (when I was on the receiving end).
